One of the most common requests are lake illustrations. These are often given as gifts to loved one as they are always filled with special views and sentimental touches.

As you can see from this McKenzie Lake illustration, there are many elements that go into making it, so here's what's happening on the back end.
First, the client reaches out to with an idea in mind, letting me know the lake they want drawn, and its location.
Before responding, I do some quick research by heading over to Google maps to see what the lake looks like. Given that lakes come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes, not all lakes can be turned into illustrations like this - however, I look at all different types of options, for example sometimes shifting the orientation can provide us with a better area to draw within.
Once I confirm with myself that the lake outline is suitable, I respond with further probing questions in regards to the size of the illustration, whether on paper, wood panel or canvas, as well as expected deadlines and most importantly what they would like to see drawn inside the outline.
Once established, quotes are sent out, and an estimated time for a draft is given. I also ask about any reference photos to help aid in the creative process.
And so that's how it usually goes!
